MARKELO (NETHERLANDS), 19 June 2009 – Markelo will hold the FIM MX3 World Motocross Championship and the UEM EMX2 European Motocross Championship this weekend

Markelo is a town in the Dutch province of Overijssel, with the population about 7000. The motoclub Ons genoegen Markelo was founded in 1932. The club has a rich history. This year they will host already 26th motocross World Championship event – this will be the 5th event for the FIM MX3 World  Motocross Championship and EMX2 European Motocross Championship. The most famous riders that has been racing in Markelo are: Eric Geboers, Sylvain Geboers, Harry Everts and Stefan Everts.

The organizer is proud to organize the big and important event, which always attracts many spectators. The track in Markelo is not typical for the Netherlands, it is hard with some sandy parts.

In the past years many spectators and fans came to support Belgian MX3 rider, World MX Champion Sven Breugelmans. It was always like his home even but this year Breugelmans will not compete in Markelo because of the injury. Many home riders will partake the event. In the MX3 World Championship two riders will have special attention of home fans – Patrick Roos from the KTM Pater Racing Team and Roy Gijsel (Kawasaki). French rider Julien Vanni (Honda) will defend first position in the Championship Classification.

Jeffrey Herlings from the JM Racing Team will be the star of the EMX2 European Championship. Although he is on the second position at the moment with 33 points behind Christophe Charlier, Herlings is the favourite on this sandy track, that is actually his home track. He has been racing in Markelo many times and he always took top result. His biggest rival Cristophe Charlier has shown he can be fast on the different type of grounds, so Herlings will need to work hard if he would like to reduce his advantage in the Championship Classification. The last important victory that Herlings took in Markelo was in the past season, when he became the EMX-85 European Champion. The EMX2 Qualifying Race will start tomorrow at 15.15 and the day will continue with the MX3 Qualifying Practice at 16.50.
