Chris Howell – Anaheim 1 Round Recap

Well, A1 has come and gone and it was an interesting night, to say the least and who would have guessed the season opener in Southern California would be a mudder?  Luckily, during practice, it stayed dry and I struggled a little bit in my first practice trying to find my flow and comfort level.

During my second practice, I finally found my stride and broke into the 59 second lap times and managed to qualify 23rd for the night. In my heat race I got a killer jump-off the gate and for most of the start straight I was in the lead. Unfortunately, going into the first turn a rider from the inside pushed wide and few of us went into the tuff blocks.

After that little setback, I was starting to make my way through the pack. While I was making a pass the other rider we collided and I was stuck under two bikes and the other rider. By the time I got back up, it was too late to recover a top-nine finish and it was onto the LCQ.

The rain started to come down right before the LCQ. My wheel spun off of the wet starting pad and I went into the first corner virtually last. I was making headway and came from 15th to 7th in 5 minutes plus 1 lap. There was a freight train of riders from 2nd place to 7th place, only a few seconds separated all of us.

Although I didn’t finish in a transfer position into the main I’m extremely proud to have come up through the pack so far in the conditions we had to race in. Overall, I’m thankful to have made it through the rain and mud of A1 healthy.

Now that race is in the past and I’m only looking forward to what Glendale has in store for me. I’d like to thank all my sponsors and everyone who is in my corner every weekend, I wouldn’t be able to be here without any of you!
