ESPN X Games 14 dates for 2008 announced

The X Games, the premier action sports event in the world, will be held July 31 through August 3, 2008 from The Home Depot Center and STAPLES Center in Los Angeles CA In 2008. The annual event will take place days before many of the athletes will leave for Beijing to compete in the 2008 Olympic Games.

The X Games features athletes from across the globe competing for medals and prize money in the following sports: skateboarding, motocross, BMX, rally car racing and surfing. Practice and elimination for the events will be held July 29-30, and all X Games competitions will take place at either The Home Depot Center or The STAPLES Center.

X Games 14 will be covered live on ESPN’s family of networks, including ABC, as well as across ESPN’s many digital media assets including EXPN.com and ESPN360.com. The event has been held in Los Angeles for five years, and will remain in in the city through at least 2009.

The success of X Games 13, held in Los Angeles this past August 3 – 6, was a watershed for the event, reflecting the evolving ways that fans engage in sports today. The event was a success across television and online media, as well as in person. Online, X Games video clips were viewed nearly 3 million times on ESPN.com, EXPN.com and ESPN360. EXPN.com (ESPN.com’s action sports hub) had its highest overall traffic ever for X Games. On television, 35.6 million people tuned into X Games and telecasts of the event were the highest-rated ever among young male viewers. Additionally, X Games content and videos were popular on ESPN mobile platforms. In Los Angeles, more than 138,000 fans attended the competition at The Home Depot Center and STAPLES Center, an increase of nearly 13 percent.

Forthcoming details on all X Games can be found on http://www.expn.com

Tim Ferry, and Ben Townley continue ‘good’ times for ‘green’ riders …

450 Motocross Class: Tim Ferry won his first overall victory since 2001 with finishes of 2/2. Grant Langston finished second overall with motos of fourth and first. (Grant’s first moto win of the year!) Third overall was Andrew Short.

But, there was more to the day than that ….. James Stewart won the first moto. James fell right at the start of the second moto, and came around at the end of lap one in 17th place. He moved up to 3rd place, but around lap 12, he fell again, and did not get back up to finish the race. The crowd nearby James was murmuring that James was grabbing his knee in pain. Lucky for James, there is a week off before racing resumes August 12 at Millville MN.

And Kevin Windham, who finished fourth overall, said on the P.A. system that he thought the race was over on the white flag lap of the second moto, slowing dramatically, (until he got going again at full speed). Possibly it cost Grant Langston the overall victory!

250 Motocross Lites Class: The championship is definitely coming down to the two Pro Circuit boys – Ben Townley and Ryan Villopoto.

Ben Townley won the overall by finishing second in the first moto, and then winning the second moto. Sometimes he seems to be flying ‘under the radar’, but the fact is he now leads the overall points standings over Ryan Villopoto, 357 points to 355 points.

‘Home track’ rider, and defending National Champion Ryan Villopoto won the first moto, but had a fall in the second moto, came back to third, and that secured him second overall on the day.

ESPN’s X Games 13: Supermoto & Supercross Day

There is no way to entirely take in all that the X Games truly are. And Saturday at The Home Depot Center was a perfect example.

Imagine an entire area completely immersed in action sports, fun, sun, excitement, & happy, youthful people. That’s the short version. To truly understand, you have to go to an X Games in person.

Another example, even though The Home Depot Center was sold out, the X Games Experience outside the stadium (where you can experience so many things, from hands on demos to music and more) probably had even more people there as inside the stadium!

ESPN’s description of the race:

Burkhart Tops Ward In Dramatic SuperMoto Final

1-2 Finish Is Exact Reverse Of Last Year’s Race

Jeff Ward led for 30 of 35 laps of the ESPN X Games 13 Moto X SuperMoto Final today, but in the second-to-last lap Mark Burkhart zipped by the veteran rider and held on to win the gold.

The finish felt eerily similar to fans of X Games SuperMoto: at last year’s X Games 12, it was Ward who snatched the win after Burkhart had led for 18 laps.

Turning last year’s silver medal into gold at X Games 13 was particularly sweet for the 27-year-old Burkhart. “This year I’ve been trying to ride differently,” he said after the race. “If anything, I’ve taught myself to be patient, and patient people get rewarded.”

He went on, “I’ve been racing patient, trying not to throw away the race at the beginning. The guys who are the most fit will finish best. Those last fifteen minutes are always a killer.”

A sellout crowd packed The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA, and cheered Burkhart as he crossed the finish line.

Next up for us – Supercross!

3. Kevin Windham / Centreville, MS

4. Chad Reed / Tampa, FL

ESPN’s description of the race:

Carmichael Dominates In First Ever X Games Event (Supercross)

10-time AMA Motocross Champion (and 5-time Supercross Champion) Ricky Carmichael may have retired from full-time competition this year, but he couldn’t resist running in the X Games’ first ever Moto X Racing Supercross event, held tonight at The Home Depot Center in Carson, CA.

Carmichael dominated his Round One qualification heat, then rolled to victory ahead of a field that included Grant Langston and Kevin Windham, who took silver and medals, respectively.

Hailed as the “Greatest of all Time,” (G.O.A.T.), Carmichael has three undefeated AMA Motocross seasons under his belt (2002, 2004-5), and is shooting for his 150th career AMA win next week, a milestone no other rider is even close to matching.

But even in semi-retirement, the X Games held a special allure for a rider who has dominated his sport for over a decade.

“I’m so pumped, you have no idea,” Carmichael said. “I’ve always felt like an outsider, if you will, just because I’ve never had my discipline in the X Games, and to finally have it and to be the first one (to win a gold medal): awesome. I cannot describe to you how happy I am.”

“Our sport’s pretty big,” he added, “But to finally have (the X Games’) blessing – it’s nice.”

Our report – Carmichael lead from start to finish – dominated!
