Two National Motocross Championships decided at Glen Helen Finale
Published August 23rd, 2007
Both the 250 championship between Ryan Villopoto and Ben Townley, and the 450 championship between Grant Langston, Andrew Short, Tim Ferry, and Mike Alessi, came down to the final moto of the 12 event, 24 race season.
In the first 250 moto, championship contenders Villopoto and Townley were out front early. After things settled in, it was Townley out front, with Villopoto giving chase. Late in the moto, Villopoto passed Townley for the lead, and then the moto win.
In the second moto, it was Ben Townley leading, and winning. But Villopoto ran the entire moto in the runner up spot, and with that, Ryan Villopoto clinches the 2007 AMA 250 Lites Motocross Championship, with a total of 544 points. Townley gets second in the series, with 525 points.
On the podium, Townley thanked Pro Circuit for helping him come over to the USA, and all the support they have given him, and announced he’ll be changing teams for 2008 (he’s moving to Honda).
In the 450 class, it was Grant Langston leading the points coming into the round over Andrew Short, Tim Ferry, and MIke Alessi. In the first moto, Alessi was the early leader, with most of the other contenders nearby – except Grant Langston – he was a way back. But as the moto progressed, Langston proceeded to pick off every one of his competitors, and moved strongly into the lead, winning the moto.
In the second moto, it was Alessi once again the early leader, but Kevin Windham was faster and more aggressive, moving into the lead. Windham was doing some jumps on the track in a way that no other attempted. He won the moto. Alessi was second, Langston finishing in third, knowing he had the overall and championship title in the bag – Grant Langston is the 2007 AMA 450 National Motocross Champion.
The track was typically Glen Helen – long, mostly sandy, with steep climbs and downhills. And, the weather was hot. So hot, we noticed MIke Alessi wearing a water hydration device on the podium in the second moto.
