After the excitement from winning the Motocross of Nations, things kept going for me the following week. On Monday, Target took me to New York for a media tour that would last me until Wednesday, meeting with several of the country’s top publications, websites and radio shows. I had never been to New York City so needless to say I couldn’t wait!
First and foremost, I was blown away by how big and busy the city is. I’ve been to LA and several other major cities thanks to the supercross season, but none of them compare to New York. You see it on TV and in movies and think there is a lot going on but when you’re in the middle of it, it’s even crazier than you’d expect. I’m not much of a fast paced kind of guy, but it was surreal to be in the middle of the premier city in America.

During the downtime of the trip, Target set me up with some awesome stuff to do. I got a taste of New York baseball by checking out a Mets game at their brand new stadium in Queens, we went to see Drake perform at the legendary Radio City Music Hall and we visited the major landmarks of Times Square and the Empire State Building.

Drake was incredible. I’m a big fan of his music and some of his material is good for pumping me up before a race. To be inside Radio City Music Hall was incredible as well. It’s such a cool building that blends old and modern styles to keep it up to date.
As far as Times Square and the Empire State Building? What can I say that hasn’t already been said? They were both awesome places that need to be experienced in person to really understand how big and how impressive they really are.
When it came to the media tour, Target had a lot for me to tackle. This was the first media tour I had ever done so I was looking forward to it. We started off at ESPN The Magazine where I got a tour of the offices and even signed their infamous pole that many other popular athletes leave their autographs on during their visit. It was good to get familiar with such a popular publication and I look forward to working with them in the future.
Next on the agenda was a visit to Sirius Radio. I’ve never really done in-studio radio appearances before so it was pretty cool to see how it’s all done.
I made sure to visit the infamous Jason Ellis Show. I’ve heard a lot about Jason and his unique approach to things and I’ve met him in the past so I knew I was in for an interesting experience. I had a ton of fun during the interview. Jason is very funny and I respect how he likes to make things interesting. I’d like to get back on the show in the future.

I also sat down with the people from Bloomberg Radio. Bloomberg is a huge business company based in the New York area and they had me on their ‘Taking Stock’ show at the end of the day. It was cool to do something a little out of the ordinary from what I’m used to. I spoke about my relationships with Target and Nike and what kind of incredible initiatives they’ve taken with their support of me.

We concluded the first day of the media tour with a trip to the Complex Magazine offices. Complex is a male lifestyle magazine that focuses on fashion, music and celebrity and was created by Marc Ecko. I did a fun Q&A for the magazine’s website so be sure to keep on the lookout for it!

It was a long day on the go from one place to another and I couldn’t wait to see what was in store for the final tour day.
>We started the day off with a visit with Emily Tran, a writer for AOL’s Lemondrop. I had never heard of this before and I came to find out that it is a women’s site about fashion, dating, etc. Without a doubt this was the toughest meeting of the whole trip. Talk about feeling out of my element! They have a regular feature called ‘Guy Candy’ and I was the focus of it. Thankfully I was able to really talk about my passion for the sport, but she put me on the spot and asked what I’m looking for in a girl. Stay tuned to the website as it’ll drop any day!

The final media tour stop was with YRB, an underground urban fashion publication. I will be a feature in their November/December issue and we did a photo shoot for it. It brought everything to a fitting conclusion. Keep a lookout for the issue and check the website for a video I did with them!<

Throughout the trip I also made time to sit down and chat with the great people at the Sirius radio show, The ABC’s of sports, as well as ESPN Rise, Sports Illustrated for Kids, TIME Magazine, the Wall Street Journal, Maxim, and a journalist named Steve Mazzucchi who has had articles published in ESPN The Magazine, Men’s Journal, Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness and Muscle & Fitness.
All in all, my first trip to NYC was a memorable one. It’s a special city and I look forward to going back. Having the opportunity to meet with so many different media outlets that cover such a wide range of topics was a privilege. I really want to help our sport grow and have a bigger presence in the mainstream. Hopefully this is the first step towards achieving that.
