Like most Supercross riders, Blake Wharton familiarized himself with a bike when he was just 7-years-old. The difference is, instead of casually riding one, Wharton was racing it.

In 2003 at the age of 12, Wharton earned his first amateur motocross championship. He also made his first Winter Nationals Olympics appearance. He continued both trends in the years that followed, also earning the AMA Amateur Ride of the Year nod in 2007. That same year he earned three additional youth titles.

With a growing list of amateur accomplishments to his credit, Wharton opted to take the next step in his career and turn pro in 2008 by running the final three events of the outdoor season.

In 2010, Wharton nabbed top-10 finishes in the point standings in both the Monster Energy Supercross Lites West and Lucas Oil AMA Motocross 250cc class.

“You learn so much every time out,” Wharton said. “I’ve been working really hard on some great things, practicing a lot, working on my speed and endurance too. I know whenever we show up to a race it’s going to be game on and I want to show up ready.”

The Texan earned his best Supercross finish of third in Phoenix and closed out the season fifth in points. During the outdoor Motocross season, Wharton was on the podium twice, in High Point and Unidilla, and wound up eighth overall.

“I struggled last year in Supercross so this year I’m trying to prepare more,” Wharton said. “It’s a matter of getting used to riding with 20 other guys that are all really good. That Phoenix race was great because I led 12 laps, and even though I ended up getting passed and finishing third, I was riding well and I knew after that I could win.”

Wharton will return to the GEICO Honda team in 2011 with plans to continue to build on his finishes.

“This will be my third year as a pro,” he said. “I won in St. Louis in 2009 and I’m really hoping to get some more trophies in 2011. I want to win and be consistent. The championship isn’t only winning races, you have to be consistent. I want to be consistently on the podium because if you are, you’ll be in the title hunt at the end.”

In 2009, Wharton joined the GEICO Honda team. Through the course of the season he earned an eighth place points finish in the Motocross Lites courtesy four podium finishes, along with a Supercross 250 class win in St. Louis.
