Supercross, or Supermoto?
Published September 22nd, 2006
Supermoto is street, dirt, and obstacles combined on one track. It’s old. (Remember ABC’s SuperBikers from the early 80′s?). But it’s new! (Bigger and cooler than ever!)
Three champions were crowned this weekend at the conclusion of the 2006 AMA SuperMoto Series. The race was held in the park next to the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California, and it’s called “Troy Lee Designs Duel at the Docks!.
The new Supermoto (450cc) champion is a name familiar to supercross fans – Jeff Ward. The final point standings show Ward on top with 429 points. Second (and another name familiar to supercross fans) is Doug Henry with 393. Third was Chris Fillmore (356), fourth Mark Burkhart (310), and fifth Jurgen Kunzel (310).
Jeff Ward’s son (Brandon) won the mini supermoto race.
In the Supermoto Lites (250cc) main event, another name famliar to supercross fans – David Pingree – won the main event. With a fifth place finish in the main, Cassidy Anderson of Utah won the series championship.
In the Supermoto Unlimited (over 450cc) main event, another name familiar to supercross fans – Micky Dymond was the winner. Second place was Ben Carlson, and Kurt Nicoll third. However, Carlson took the series championship over Dymond, 200 – 182.
The event and the venue were a tremendous success. Racing thru a park next to the Queen Mary, tree-lined surface streets made up most of the pavement sections of the course. The beautiful harbor right next to the track, with the skyline of downtown Long Beach on the horizon. The exact crowd figures weren’t know at the conclusion of the event, but it was known that it was the largest supermoto crowd in US history. It was the place to be the first weekend in November!
