James Stewart fires opening shot in 2006 Motocross … Mike Alessi sweeps Lites

One of the story lines for the day was the weather. Rain. Certainly not the downpour that was expected, but it rained none-the-less. That didn’t stop Kawasaki’s James Stewart from taking the overall in the Motocross class. James won the first heat after a dramatic battle with Ricky Carmichael, and then a last lap pass on Chad Reed for the lead. That heat saw ‘The Big Three’ finish first second and third. Stewart first, Reed second, and Carmichael third. Cut Ricky some slack though – he still rode great. He fell on th opening lap, came around 23 at the completion of lap 1, yet still powered his way to third in the moto.

In the second moto, it was all Carmichael. He led from the start, and stretched it out almost every lap. That didn’t matter to James Stewart – he stayed in second place, knowing that with that second, he wrapped up the overall win. Reed was equi-distant back in third. This moto had Carmichael winning, Stewart second, Reed third.

The overall shows Stewart on top with 1/2 finishes, Carmichael second with 3/1 finishes, and Reed third with 2/3 finishes.

Notes: At the end of the day, Carmichael had to get a few stitches in his shin – the result of hitting a footpeg near the end of the final laps. He’s fine, and will be ready to go next week in PA. RC had won 27 straight overall victories until James snapped that streak today. Chad Reed did mention that his ‘program’ for 2007 will be supercross only – no outdoor motocross. David Vuillemin returned to action, riding for Motoworld Racing Yamaha.

In the ‘Lites’ class, Mike Alessi led every lap. Can’t get much better than that! Mike signed a new, three year contract with KTM the day before. Second place went to Yamaha of Troy’s Brett Metcalfe with 5/2 finishes. He looked very good in the mud in the second moto. And Bretty’s YOT team-mate, fellow Aussie Andrew McFarlane finished third with moto finishes of 4/3.

Notes: KTM also has a new rider in their camp, number 168, Zack Osborne. Zack got a sixth place in the first moto. Grant Langston tried racing, even though he’s nursing an injured wrist. He finished 36th in the first moto, and did not race the second, due to the hurting wrist.
