Recap
The day for Round 6 in San Diego? Picture perfect - warm, bright, and sunny. Another 'winter' day in southern California.
For many riders, San Diego is one of their favorites events of the year. Big crowds, but a more laid back and relaxed feeling. The track itself was very nice - challenging, with a sandy first corner, and a brutal set of whoops that following right after.
In the opening ceremonies, Travis Pastrana was on hand to do a lap for the crowd with Chad Reed. And Travis, being Travis, did a 360 degree backflip over the finish line jump!
In the 250 Western Division Lites class, the Main event belonged to Jason Lawrence. Jason has three wins in a row now, and has taken over the points lead as the series heads to Houston next weekend. His main competitor Ryan Dungey had a fall in the main, eventually finishing sixth.
Lawrence holeshot the 15 lap main, never being seriously challenged. Second went to Thomas Hahn, and third was Robert Kiniry.
Unfortunately, many people left after the Lites main event, with the complaint that 'there was occasional motorcycle racing in between the commercials and advertisements'.
The 450 Supercross Main event was one of the more exciting races of the season. As the pack sorted itself out on the opening lap, it was number 22, Chad Reed up front. But Davi Millsaps forced his way inside of Chad and into the lead thru the fourth corner.
At the end of lap three - Reed passed Millsaps back for the lead. At the end of lap 5, the running order up front was Reedy, Millsaps, Andrew Short, Tim Ferry, Kevin Windham, and Josh Hill.
On lap 13, Chad fell in the sandy first corner! That handed the lead over to Millsaps, as Ferry moved into third position.
The next lap, Reed almost fell again in the same sandy corner! The running order was Millsaps up front, followed by Reed, Ferry, Short, and Windham.
Lap 16 - Reed passes Millsaps back for the lead!
On the last lap, Ferry got by Millsaps to grab second. At the end of the 20 lap main, it was Reedy on top, Ferry second, Millsaps third.
Notes: Chad Reed wore a unique helmet for the event, a San Diego Chargers football team themed helmet. Very cool looking!
