Saturday – The first day of the 2006 FOX Motocross of Nations was packed with both crowds & action, and finished with a “coup de scene” in the Press Room.
James Stewart (USA), Ryan Villopoto (USA) and Steve Ramon (BEL) won the 3 qualifying motos of the day, … but one of the biggest thrills was by Stefan Everts, as Stefan suddenly appeared in the KTM press conference. The Belgian MX legend was introduced by Pit Beirer, Stefan Pierer and Heinz Kinigadner as the new Race Director for Motocross Activities of the Austrian factory for 2007.
Many people have been wondering what KTM’s plans for the future are, and, what was Stefan’s plan for the future as well. One shocking answer for both questions!
10 time Motocross World Champion Stefan Everts stated goal for 2007 will be supporting the KTM riders in any aspect of their training and racing activities, and, Stefan will represent the factory at the race venues.
It will be another busy season for Stefan, but the head of Team Belgium is 100% focused on the final challenge of his career – helping his team win the 2006 Motocross of Nations.
In the MX1 qualifying moto, Everts and Stewart fought a bit at the start. Once the American took over the lead he showed impressive rhythm and brought first place home without any challenge.
Behind Stewart were Everts and Pourcel challenging each other for second. The Frenchman (Pourcel) passed Stefan on the second lap but Everts passed him again and finished second.
Pourcel broke his front wheel and managed to bring the bike home in eighth. Third place was ‘home’ rider Billy Mackenzie and Kiwi Josh Coppins was right behind him in fourth. The top five was completed by Estonian Tanel Leok.
Stewart won the MX1 qualifying moto with a 2.979 second advantage over Everts.
The second qualifying moto was for the MX2 class. American Ryan Villopoto won from Christophe Pourcel, who second at the checkered flag. There was much more “confusion” behind with a challenge between 3 different continents: Rattray (South Africa), Cairoli (Italy) and Townley (New Zealand). At the finish it was Cairoli, then Townley, then Rattray.
Warming up with the first 2 qualifiers, the massive crowd was thrilled by the third & most exciting qualifying heat of the day. In the Open class South African Wyatt Avis stormed out of the gates, with a hungry Suzuki duo behind his shoulders: Ramon and Tedesco. With Avis and Tedesco swapping their places, it was Ramon who finally snatched first place. Avis made a mistake and almost fell off the bike while second, and Tedesco got his chance to pass. At the finish it was Ramon first, Tedesco second and Avis third. Yves Demaria finished fourth and Finnish rider Jussi Vehvilainen was fifth.
