Tony Cairoli is the defending World MX1 Motocross Champion, racing for KTM …
Saturday: The first free practice went great and I had the best lap time. But in the second practice I was a searching a bit for the right settings of my bike, and I was struggling a bit. In the last seconds of practice I made the eighth best time.
In the qualification heat I started in third position and I passed David Philippaerts, but then made a small mistake and he passed me back again. Then both David and I passed Max Nagl …. and I finished second in the qualification heat behind David.
Sunday: In the first heat I started around eighth position. After not that good of a start, I moved up and I could pass Max Nagl and then I was in second behind Clement Desalle. He had already a big gap. I could close the gap, but time ran out – Desalle won the first heat, and I finished second.
In the second heat I had a nice holeshot, ahead of David Philippaerts and A. Boissiere. I pushed hard on the first laps and I could pull away until I had a big gap – 12 seconds. Because of that big gap, I could ride smooth and I wasn’t tired at all!
Overall I am really happy with this weekend! I’m happy because I won my first GP on the 350cc bike and that was a big victory for KTM. I’m also happy to win my home GP in front of my own fans!! And I’m happily surprised that I could take the red plate home! I get to wear it at the next GP.
I’m going to Belgium now to train there in the sand before the next GP – the GP of Valkenswaard. I’ll see you guys in two weeks, at my ‘second’ home GP in Holland!
