Angel Stadium, Anaheim CA hosted the opening press conference of the most prestigious off-road motorcycle series in the world: the AMA Supercross Series, officially know as the Monster Energy AMA Supercross Series, an FIM World Championship.
The 17 events series travels all across the USA, with a stop in Canada as well. The three main championships include: the premiere Supercross class championship, along with the West and East Regional SX championships, which will be decided at the series finale at Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas on the first Saturday of May.
Jeff Emig, himself a former Supercross and Motocross Champion, opened the press conference for the assembled media on hand. Jeff recapped some of the great history of the sport – covering his own memories of watching supercross on TV, to winning his championship in 1997, to icons like David Bailey, Rick Johnson, Jeremy McGrath, Marty Smith, Johnny O’Mara, Ricky Carmichael, and more.
And with that Jeff said, “On to 2012!”
Five riders on stage were Trey Canard, Ryan Dungey, Ryan Villopoto, Chad Reed, and James Stewart.
Jeff then introduced Senior Director of Motor sports for Feld – Mr. Todd Jendro. Todd presented the Asterisk Mobile Medical group with a check for 100,000 dollars!
Next up, COO of Feld Motor sports, Mr. Ken Hudgens, announced that Todd has been promoted to Vice President within the company. He also announced that Feld and Monster Energy beverage company are extending their relationship in AMA Supercross thru the year 2016. Ken then introduced Bruce Stjernstrom from Monster Energy. Bruce said that Monster invests in a lot of properties, and that supercross is definitely one of it’s most important.
Now time for the five riders on hand, first up was Trey Canard, the 2010 AMA MX Lites Championship. Trey cracked a great joke, talked about his health, ability to spend time with his family, and more. Trey does not know yet when he will return to racing.
James Stewart, who won the Supercross title twice (2007, 2009), spoke next. He said his off-season was good, and excited about the new team (JGRMX). James commented on a potential car racing career because of his association with Joe Gibbs Racing. James said he still has some unfinished business in the sport of supercross and motocross before embarking on anything with four wheels.
Next to speak was Ryan Dungey. Ryan has won a Supercross title as well – 2010, along with the 2010 AMA Motocross class championship. Ryan talked about his change to the Red Bull KTM team, and how happy he was with the team’s commitment level. He said he feels fit, and ready to go racing.
Next to speak, another 2-time SX Champion (2004, 2008), Chad Reed. Chad feels very comfortable on his bikes, and that there is a confidence level he has being on the same bike for the second year, with much of the same staff on his TwoTwo Motorsports team.
Next up, Mr. Dave Prater, the Director of Supercross for Feld Motor Sports. Dave talked about defending Supercross Champion Ryan Villopoto. His determination. He ‘never say die’ attitude. His drive. His commitment to the sport. And then Dave presented Ryan with a Championship ring.
