Honda Red Riders Finish One-Two-Three in Texas

Published April 4th, 2011

The Honda Red Riders took control of the top spots at round 13 of the AMA Supercross Championship in Arlington, TX, over the weekend, taking victory in the Supercross class and nabbing two Supercross Lites East podiums. American Honda Racing’s Trey Canard clinched his third Supercross win of the season at Cowboys Stadium, while GEICO Honda teammates Justin Barcia and Blake Wharton took second and third on the Lites East podium.

After finishing second in his heat race, Canard got away to a good start in the main, moving into the number one spot early on the opening lap. Once out front, Canard was unstoppable on his CRF450R, leading all 20 laps to take a wire-to-wire victory. Canard’s finish marked his third win and fifth podium of the season and elevated him to fourth overall in the championship. Fill-in teammate Cole Seely, who finished third in his heat race, had a coming together with another rider on the opening lap, and he was unable to finish the race.

“I am the happiest I have been all season right now,” said Canard. “Everything about this weekend felt right. My bike setup was spot on and I rode really well, plus I had a lot of family and friends here to support me; everything about this event felt good to me. The track was tough, especially the whoops section. I crashed hard in the whoops in practice, but I’m happy that I didn’t let that get to me and I was able to get through them without any issues in the main. It feels amazing to take my third Supercross win and to move up to fourth in the championship points.”

TwoTwo Motorsports’ Chad Reed headed into the event leading the title chase, but his campaign suffered a setback after being hit hard by another rider on lap nine in the main event. Suffering extensive damage to his bike in the crash, Reed soldiered on to finish eighth overall and is now second in the points standings. GEICO Honda’s Kevin Windham had a strong showing, finishing in fifth position.

In Lites East competition, Barcia recorded his seventh-straight podium of the season in Texas. Finishing second in his heat race, Barcia got away to a good start in the main, grabbing the holeshot and moving into the lead on the opening lap. Despite racing with a broken wrist, Barcia put in a solid performance on his CRF250R, and after several exchanges for the lead, eventually took the checkers in the runner-up spot. Teammate Wharton also got a good start in the main, and scored his second podium of the season with a third-place finish. Privateer Honda racer Darryn Durham finished sixth, while Alex Martin and Tyler Bright rounded out the ninth and 10th spots.
