Friday’s at the Motocross Nationals
The Motocross Nationals have a new program this year and it starts with a Friday Night Fan Fest! Now that the Pro’s race on Saturday; Friday is a pre-showcase of the guys on their bikes and it’s also your chance to meet your favorite Motocross racers, get a signed poster and enjoy all the commotion in the pits as the guys prepare for race day.
It’s all part of the package at the Nationals this year and I took in all in, starting with a press conference.
The three 250 class riders interviewed were Brett Metcalfe, Ryan Dungey, and Tyler Rattray. Each of them spoke about their views on the new Saturday racing format and schedule but mostly the guys spoke about how prepared and ready they all are to get to the business of racing. I couldn’t agree more!
The press conference continued with a few of the 450 class riders at the mic; Andrew Short, Mike Alessi, Ryan Villopoto, and Chad Reed. All four took their turn at the microphone to talk to the press; it was quick and straight to the point, reflections of goals from each of the guys and their expectations of racing on Saturday’s, which most replied with approval of a shorter weekend. The press conference program was quick and efficient and it was now time to move out on the track.
I made my way around the steep Glen Helen terrain to position myself for some great pictures. Making my way closer to the Talladega turn, I am always amazed at how steep that first turn really is; that nickname really does fits.
I decided to make my way up one of the many huge hills and check out some of the action up top. After a 10 minute climb in the nice sunny 80+ degree heat, I finally reached my destination, it was beautiful and well worth those first few minutes of catching my breath!
Watching the guys tear up the huge rutted hills and then fly around and down again was a great demonstratoin of their skills and abilities and catching that action on my camera added to fun.
With each lap the guys would step it up, testing the limits on their bikes, learning the twist and turns of the track, building the groundwork for the day to come.
After the guys were done on the track, I headed over to the Fan Fest area to check out all the fun. A long row of tables was setup with a star studded showcase of Motocross riders and Heroes and they were all signing posters. I decided to get in line and try my luck at getting one of these really cool posters.
It was very cool to see such a diverse group of motocross riders all together for their fans. And what was even better was seeing the smiles of all those kids when their favorite motocross rider took the time with them, talking to them, shaking their hands, posing for pictures, and signing posters.
Overall the Friday Fan Fest was a lot fun and I got a great poster with tons of autographs! I hope everyone gets a chance to check out the Motocross action as it sweeps across the USA this summer, and if not in person, don’t forget some of these races are LIVE on TV!! And Of course, come back here for my latest Motocross Adventures!
