Friday at ESPN’s Navy Moto X World Championships
This weekend is the first ever ESPN Navy Moto X World Championships. Today, Friday, was a day of practicing and set-up for many – from the riders to the camera operators.
Below you’ll see two disciplines that really caught our eye, mostly because of the two names involved that are so well known to supercross and motocross fans (Ricky Carmichael and Travis Pastrana) but also the disciplines themselves – Step Up for Carmichael, and Speed & Style for Pastrana.
Step up is similar to doing the high jump – only on a motorcycle! Speed & Style is something new to the Navy Moto X World Championships, and it could very well be the star event of the entire weekend. Two riders will start side-by-side, and head into their own individual lanes. One lane is 100% racing, while the other lane adds some freestyle sections. After the first lap, riders must change lanes, which means each rider will complete one lap in each of the lanes. The rider’s score is based half on total time of the two lap event, and half the score is based on freestyle performance. It should be epic!
Below you’ll see four videos and 10 photos of Ricky and Travis today. We hope you enjoy them, and get a chance to make it out to Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego over the weekend. If not, all the action is live on ESPN TV.
