Babbitt’s Monster Energy TiLube Kawasaki’s Tyler Bowers captured his first career AMA Arenacross championship at the MetroCentre in Rockford, Ill. on Saturday with a dominating win. After an eighth-place finish on Friday, Bowers bounced back with his 11th win of the season and secured his spot on top of the championship standings. Teammate Chad Johnson continued to hunt down second place in the points standings with a second-place finish on Friday and a fifth-place on Saturday. Gray Davenport worked his way through the pack during both 25-lap main events to finish 10th on Friday and improve to eighth on Saturday.

The Champion

For Bowers, his first championship was one of redemption. Last season, he was on track to winning the title before suffering season-ending injuries. He had to overcome two broken legs, which resulted in months of physical therapy. Bowers was determined to come back and his hard work paid off with his first arenacross title and 11 wins already this year.

“Winning the title means so much to me,” said Bowers. “I really don’t know what to say, but I’m so happy for all the hard work to pay off.”

Creeping Closer to Second

Successfully working through the pack during Friday’s main event, Johnson was able to overcome a tough start and finish on the podium for the 11th time this season. He was looking to repeat his runner-up finish on Saturday, but a last lap crash pushed him back to fifth for the night. Johnson currently sits third in the championship standings, just eight points back from second.

“I had a bad start on Saturday and was trying my hardest to get through the pack,” said Johnson. “On the last lap, I made a bad judgment call and stuck my bike in too hot, and ended up on the ground. I’m looking forward to the last race in Des Moines. I really want finish the season second in the standings and I definitely think it’s a possibility.”

Improvement

Davenport didn’t let two tough starts get to him as he pushed through the pack both nights. He would round out the top-10 on Friday, but improve his finish on Saturday night to eighth. With consistency throughout the year, Davenport has been able to hold on to seventh in the points and sits nine points down from sixth.

One More Race

With the championship already in the books, Bowers will be fighting to add one more win for the 2011 season. His biggest competition comes from his teammate Johnson who will be looking to gain eight points on second place in the standings.
