2013 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross – Round 2 – Lakewood

Published May 25th, 2013

Ryan Villopoto wins Thunder Valley MX 450 class by sweeping both motos. Eli Tomac takes 250 overall at today’s round 2 of the 2013 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series

The defending Champions are Blake Baggett (250 class) and Ryan Dungey (450 class). But after last week’s opening round in Sacramento, it’s Kenny Roczen and Ryan Villopoto as the series points leaders coming into Colorado this weekend.

In 250 Qualifying, the quickest lap goes to Eli Tomac – 2 minutes 3.74 seconds . Then Ken Roczen 2.05.07, Zach Osborne 2.06.06, Blake Baggett 2.06.45, and Marvin Musquin fifth at 2.06.46. 68 riders attempted to qualify.

In 450 Qualifying, the quickest lap was turned in by Ryan Villopoto – 2 minutes 3.43 seconds . Then, making a stop in the USA after the MX GP of Brazil last weekend, Rockstar Suzuki World MX rider from Belgium, Clement Desalle was second – 2.03.51. Third – James Stewart 2.03.65. Next, Ryan Dungey 2.04.13. Dean Wilson 2.04.88, Ryan Sipes, Desalle’s Suzuki teammate Kevin Strijbos, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, Broc Tickle, Malcolm Stewart, Mike Alessi, Tyla Rattray, Josh Grant, Jake Weimer, Andrew Short, and Justin Brayton (2.07.25). Chad Reed qualified 19th out of 87 riders, but Chad is also suffering from flu-like symptoms.

450 Moto 1 – the early leader is Justin Barcia. He’s being chased by Ryan Dungey and Ryan Villopoto. Chad Reed has fallen in the first corner. A little while later, James Stewart falls as he runs into the fallen Jake Weimer.

At the end of lap three – it’s Justin Barcia leading, Ryan Dungey second. Ryan Villopoto is third. Then Trey Canard, Clement Desalle, Mike Alessi, Tyla Rattray, Malcolm Stewart, Josh Grant, and Dean Wilson round out the top ten. Chad Reed is 28th, James Stewart is 36th.

Each of these races goes 30 minutes plus 2 laps. On lap 8, about halfway thru the race, Ryan Dungey moves past Justin Barcia and into the lead. Ryan Villopoto is in third, right behind both of them. Those top three are well ahead of the rest of the pack. Fourth is Trey Canard, fifth is Clement Desalle. Chad Reed is 22nd, and James Stewart is 24th.

On lap ten, Villopoto goes around Barcia and moves to 2nd. On lap 11, RV goes past Dungey and into the lead! It’s Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, and Clement Desalle. James Stewart is 20th. Chad Reed is 23rd.

Ryan Villopoto takes the checkered flag in this 17 lap race. Ryan Dungey is second, Justin Barcia third. Then Trey Canard, Clement Desalle, Mike Alessi, Tyla Rattray, Josh Grant, Malcolm Stewart, and Kevin Strijbos. James Stewart 15th. Chad Reed 23rd.

250 Moto 1 – it’s Zach Osborne with the holeshot. But before the end of the first lap, Kenny Roczen has moved into the lead. The running order at the end of lap one – Ken Roczen, Zach Osborne, Eli Tomac, Jason Anderson, Marvin Musquin, Dominic Izzi, Martin Davalos, Cooper Webb, D Gosselaar, and Kyle Cunningham tenth. Blake Wharton 13th, Cole Seely 16th. Blake Baggett 28th!

Before the end of lap two, Osborne had fallen landing off a jump.

At the end of lap five, it’s Kenny Roczen leading Eli Tomac. Marvin Musquin is now third. Then Jason Anderson, Cooper Webb, Martin Davalos, Kyle Cunningham, Zach Osborne, Dominic Izzi, and Joey Savatgy rounding out the top ten. Blake Baggett is 19th.

Cooper Webb has made a move to pass Marvin Musquin for third. At the end of ten laps – Roczen, Tomac, Cooper Webb, Musquin, Anderson, Davalos, Osborne, Jeremy Martin, Cole Seely, Dominic Izzi. Blake Baggett is up to 12th.

“Hometown” rider Eli Tomac is making it interesting. Roczen is leading … but now towards the end of this race Tomac is very close behind Roczen.

At the end of this 30 minute and 2 lap race (17 laps total), Kenny Roczen has won. Eli Tomac finishes right behind him. Third goes to Cooper Webb. Then Marvin Musquin, Jason Anderson, Zach Osborne, Martin Davalos, Jeremy Martin, Blake Baggett ninth, Cole Seely tenth.

450 Moto 2 – once again it’s Justin Barcia exiting the first corner with the lead. At the end of the first lap, it’s Barcia leading, Trey Canard is second, Ryan Villopoto is third, Ryan Dungey is fourth, then Mike Alessi, James Stewart, Clement Desalle, Dean Wilson, Chad Reed, and Jake Weimer.

And then Ryan Villopoto dispatches Canard to take over second.

Ryan Villopoto seems just a bit better than any other rider on the track. On lap four, he moves past Barcia and into first position. The running order at the end of lap four – Ryan Villopoto, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Clement Desalle, Mike Alessi, Dean Wilson, Jake Weimer, Kevin Strijbos, Tyla Rattray, and Malcolm Stewart 12th. Chad Reed is 15th.

Lap 7 Dungey moves past Barcia and into second place. It’s RV, RD, and JB. Same top three as the first 450 moto.

Lap 9, James Stewart has passed Justin Barcia and moved into third place. It’s Ryan Villopoto, Ryan Dungey, James Stewart, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, Clement Desalle, Mike Alessi, Dean Wilson, Kevin Strijbos, and Tyla Rattray top ten out of 40 riders. Chad Reed 17th.

Ryan Villopoto has done it again – he’s won this moto to ‘sweep’ today’s 450 race, which of course secures the overall victory. He’s won all four motos of the season for the 450 class. Ryan Dungey finishes second in this 17 lap race, and takes second overall. The rest of the top ten in this moto – James Stewart, Justin Barcia, Trey Canard, Mike Alessi, Clement Desalle, Kevin Strijbos, Dean Wilson, and Tyla Rattray.

250 Moto 2 – coming out of the first corner, it’s Jeremy Martin (YAM 77) with the lead. But quickly, it’s Zach Osborne into the lead … and then teammate Tomac goes past Osborne and into the lead! At the end of the first lap, it’s Eli Tomac first, Ken Roczen second, Zach Osborne third, Jeremy Martin fourth, Marvin Musquin fifth, Blake Wharton sixth, then Joey Savatgy, Blake Baggett and Cole Seely rounding out the top ten.

Five laps in it’s Tomac a big lead. It’s Eli Tomac, Ken Roczen, Zach Osborne, Marvin Musquin, Jeremy Martin, Blake Baggett, Blake Wharton, Martin Davalos, Justin Bogle (34), and Joey Savatgy tenth.

If Tomac wins, and Roczen takes second, they will tie on points (47 points each), but Eli would get the overall win because of the better second moto performance.

Tomac, who lives near Cortez, Colorado, has an almost 20 second lead over second place Roczen. Osborne third, Musquin fourth, Baggett fifth – then are ten laps into this moto.

Eli Tomac wins this moto (16 laps) by a large margin, and with it, takes the overall 250 class win. Zach Osborne makes a pass on Kenny Roczen on the last lap to take second in this moto. Ken Roczen finishes third in this moto, and second overall on the day. The rest of the top ten in this moto – Marvin Musquin, Blake Baggett, Jeremy Martin, Justin Bogle, Blake Wharton, Kyle Cunningham, and Martin Davalos.
