2013 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross – Round 12 – Lake Elsinore CA

Published August 24th, 2013

Ryan Villopoto & Eli Tomac had already clinched the AMA National Motocross Championships in the 450 & 250 classes for 2013 – but that didn’t stop them from winning today at the 2013 Lucas Oil AMA Pro Motocross Series Finale at Lake Elsinore MX Park

  • Team USA (Dungey, Tomac, Barcia) for the Motocross of Nations in Germany late next month officially unveiled their riding gear and riding numbers Thursday at Lake Elsinore – check out photos of them here.
  • Notes: It’s hot here in Lake Elsinore. Very hot. James Stewart is not racing today because of a lingering injury. Chad Reed is not racing today either. Chad says “2013 was never going to be a good year for so many reasons. I am focused on ensuring that every detail, both on and off the track is covered 110% so we start next year with the momentum that we should. I am not finished not by a long shot and neither is TwoTwo Motorsports, our sole focus right now is to secure our commercial arrangements and partnerships to ensure we have a well funded, two rider team that is competing for wins and championships every time we are on the track. In hindsight maybe I should of stopped earlier in the season to focus on my health but I soldiered on both equally for the sponsors and the fans. It is now at the stage where there is no point in doing so. I am not riding to my full potential, I am not representing the sponsors in a way I am comfortable with nor am I giving the fans the show they expect of me or deserve.

In 450 Qualifying, the quickest lap is turned in by Josh Grant number 33 on Yamaha – 2:09. Ryan Villopoto second – 2:10:34, Ryan Dungey 2:10:93, Justin Barcia 2:11:92, Jake Weimer, Broc Tickle, Trey Canard, Tyla Rattray, Justin Brayton, Andrew Short tenth at 2 minutes 14 seconds. 72 riders attempting to Qualify.

450 Moto 1 – the early leader is Josh Grant! He’s followed by Justin Barcia, Ryan Villopoto, and Ryan Dungey.

On lap five, Ryan Villopoto has moved past Josh Grant and into the lead. Running order – RV, Grant, Barcia, Dungey, Canard, and Brett Metcalfe.

While Villopoto is running out front, Ryan Dungey makes the pass on Josh Grant for second place on lap 14. It’s RV leading Dungey by almost 30 seconds! Grant third, then Canard, Barcia, Short, Rattray, Weimer, Malcolm Stewart, and Brett Metcalfe 10th.

This race (30 minutes plus 2 laps) goes 16 laps. And Ryan Villopoto wins another moto. Second thru tenth: Dungey, Grant, Canard, Barcia, Short, Rattray, Weimer, M Stewart, B Metcalfe.

250 Moto 1 – the early leader is … Kenny Roczen! He’s followed by Jeremy Martin, Eli Tomac, Marvin Musquin, Cooper Webb, Zach Osborne, Matt Bisceglia, Justin Hill, Cole Seely, Justin Bogle tenth and 2013 Regional Supercross Champion Wil Hahn is 11th.

Five laps complete on this very hot and sunny day – Ken Roczen leads Jeremy Martin by almost 12 seconds. Third place is Eli Tomac, then Cooper Webb, Zach Osborne, Cole Seely, Justin Hill, Justin Bogle, Wil Hahn, and Marvin Musquin tenth.

As they finish lap 8, Tomac has made a move on Martin for second position. Roczen now leads Tomac by 12 seconds …

This moto looks like it belongs to Kenny Roczen. And, after 16 laps Ken Roczen has won this moto! Second thru tenth – E Tomac, J Martin, C Webb, Z Osborne, W Hahn, K Cunningham, J Bogle, M Musquin, and Cole Seely.

450 Moto 2 – word has come from the Joe Gibbs Racing Yamaha team that Josh Grant, who finished third in the first moto, will not be racing in the second moto. The heat was a bit too much – the team and Josh both decided not best to risk heat stroke by riding the second moto.

The early leader is Josh’s teammate Justin Brayton – but not for long. 2013 450 series champion Ryan Villopoto quickly moves past and into first place.

At the end of lap one it’s Ryan Villopoto, Justin Barcia, Ryan Dungey, Justin Brayton, Malcolm Stewart, Brett Metcalfe, Tyla Rattray, Andrew Short, Jake Weimer, and Zach Freeberg.

Lap three – Villopoto is out front, and, Barcia and Dungey are battling. Dungey makes a move on Barcia to take over second place.

The top three have remained the same 25 minutes into this race – Villopoto leading Dungey by 18 seconds, and Dungey leading Barcia by 12 seconds. But Tyla Rattray has moved up to fourth. Then Weimer, Metcalfe, Mike Alessi, Justin Brayton, Weston Peick, and Andrew Short.

Ryan Villopoto has put a cap on his amazing 2013 season by winning the final moto of this series (and the overall victory). Ryan won his third Monster Energy AMA / FIM Supercross Championship earlier this year, and wrapped up this (his second) 450 AMA Motocross Championship last week in Utah. He dominated the premiere class all year. Second thru tenth in this moto: Dungey, Barcia, Weimer, Alessi, Rattray, Peick, Metcalfe, Brayton, and Trey Canard.

250 Moto 2 – looks like Zach Osborne with the early lead, but midway thru the first lap Cooper Webb (number 175 Yamaha) goes by Osborne for the lead. And a few moments later, Kenny Roczen takes a fall.

The end of the first lap – C Webb, Blake Baggett, Z Osborne, Justin Bogle, Eli Tomac, Jason Anderson, Jeremy Martin, Wil Hahn, Martin Davalos, and Justin Hill tenth. Ken Roczen is 12th. Marvin Musquin is 22nd.

Next lap – Blake Baggett moves into first! Then Webb, Osborne, Tomac, Bogle, Anderson, J Martin, Davalos, W Hahn, Kyle Cunningham, and Ken Roczen.

The guy on the move? Eli Tomac. It’s Baggett leading, Tomac now in second, about four seconds behind Baggett. As they complete lap five – the rest of the top ten – Anderson, Webb, Bogle, Osborne, Martin, Hahn, Roczen, Hill. Tomac is in position to win the overall …

The last moto of the season, and the moto win goes to Blake Baggett. Second place in this moto, but with the overall victory today – 2013 250 series champion Eli Tomac. Third place in this race – Cooper Webb. Then Zach Osborne, Jeremy Martin, Wil Hahn, Ken Roczen, Martin Davalos, Justin Hill, and Marvin Musquin.

Postscript: Blake Baggett has been penalized in this last moto and is now officially scored as 2nd in this race. (The penalty was a result of jumping a jump while flags were out that tell a rider not to jump because a rider is down on the track.)
