2012 Paris / Bercy Supercross – Day 1

Published November 9th, 2012

After 30 years Bercy is still the place to be for the very best of European Supercross. And the first night of three in the thumping heart of the French capital was no let-down. Monster Energy’s Jake Weimer triumphed in front of a packed arena and set up the first push towards the prestigious “King of Bercy” title that will be awarded for the 31st time on Sunday evening.

The girls danced, the fans exhausted the air horns and the freestylers – with names like Torronteras, Higashino, Pages, Villa and World Champion Bizouard – wowed in their aerobatics. But it was former SX Lites Champ Jake Weimer in his Kawasaki 450 who took the fight in the main event to Eli Tomac on his Honda 450 through 15 laps around a tight course that weaved around the stadium floor and through some of the Palais Omnisports ‘catacombs’.

Weimer was faultless and defended a last lap attack from his USA countryman to grab the first checkered flag of this historic edition.

Jake said “First night and first overall – I can’t ask for more than that. I got some good starts and that’s important when the racing is this tight. I kept telling myself the whole time that I couldn’t make any mistakes. The whole day Eli and I have been within a tenth of a second of each other on lap times. I had to make smooth clean laps, and I knew he wouldn’t be able to get around me. I’d like to win all three mains, but to come out as the “King of Bercy” you have to be consistent all three nights because it’s easy to throw one away, which is what I did last year. You have to stay out of trouble. This track is really difficult. In the U.S. our supercross tracks are bigger, so to come here it feels like the bikes have so much power in such a tight space. It is tricky over 15 laps because you have to be careful and so precise. It is challenging, but it was fun. I had a good time last year and that’s why I’m back this time.”

Day 2 tomorrow.
