2011 FIM World Motocross – Round 3 – USA

FIM World Motocross Championships – Round 3 at Glen Helen Raceway in southern California. Day starts off cold and wet – sun comes out as MX GP race one started! Ken Roczen wins MX2 by sweeping both motos. Clement Desalle does the same in MX1!

Glen Helen Raceway

Day started off typical southern California – rain. It never rains in southern California, right? The track, which is very hilly and sand based, usually holds up well to extra moisture. But it did get a bit rutted and wet in some areas.

The MX2 first moto took off at noon, and the sun started to emerge. Ken Roczen had the lead at the right from the start. And Ken led all 13 laps, winning this race, and extending his series points lead. In the second moto, Kenny did the same thing – dominate. Ken goes 1/1 on the day, taking the overall victory.

Second in both motos – Ken’s KTM Red Bull Teka teammate Jeffrey Herlings. Jeffrey is 16 years of age, Kenny 17. Next week the GP tour heads to Brazil for round 4 of the 2011 FIM World MX Series (FIM World Motocross schedule here).

Third overall, cementing his third place position in points – Tommy Searle. Tommy went a hard fought 5/3. And his Great Britain country man, and Kawasaki team-mate Max Anstie scored fourth overall – Max had finishes of 3/5.

The quickest lap of the first MX2 race was Ken Roczen, at 3 minutes 4 seconds. It’s a long track. In the second moto, as the track dried out with the sunshine, Ken’s fastest lap was 2 minutes 52 seconds.

World MX2 Champion Marvin Musquin, in his first race since November, looked very smooth. He finished 19th in the first heat, sixth in the second. He’ll start racing the AMA National Motocross Championships next weekend in Sacramento CA. (AMA Motocross schedule here).

MX1. The leader at the end of lap one of the first moto – Belgium’s Clement Desalle. And that first lap might of been the most difficult part of the day for Clement, as he went on to easily win both motos of today MX1 Grand Prix. Clement scores the maximum 50 points with the double moto sweep.

KTM Red Bull Teka rider from Germany, Max Nagl took second overall today with scores of 3/2. And third overall, with his first podium ever, World Honda Motocross rider Evgeny “Bobby” Bobryshev from Russia, with moto finishes of 7/3.

In the second moto, points leader coming into the day Steven Frossard and World Motocross MX 1 Champion Tony Cairoli crashed together on a big uphill on the first lap. Tony would work his way up to 11th and finish fifth overall – a nice comeback. Steven fell again later in the moto, finishing 18th overall on the day.

Clement Desalle has now taken back the series points lead for MX1.

The World Motocross Series heads to Brazil next weekend, and the American National Motocross Series starts up next week in Sacramento, California.
