2011 FIM World Motocross – Round 13 – Great Britain – Qualifying

Published August 20th, 2011

Round 13 of the FIM World Motocross Series – Great Britain. KTM has two racers on top. In MX 1 World Motocross Champion Tony Cairoli from Italy leads that series, and German wrecking crew Ken Roczen has the series points lead in the MX2 class. Surprisingly, former AMA regional Supercross Champion and former MX2 World Champion Christophe Pourcel wins today’s MX1 Qualifying Race! And Kenny Roczen takes victory in MX2.

Matterley Basin

Grand Prix Motocross and England. They go together so well, with such a rich tradition and history. The UK has produced World MX Champions such as Jeff Smith, Graham Noyce, Neil Hudson, and Dave Thorpe.

Two riders not competing this weekend in Britain – Belgian Clement Desalle and Russian Evgeny Bobryshev – both of the MX1 class. They crashed last week in the Belgian National MX Championship series round in Balen. The result – shoulder injury for Clement, and then surgery. Evgeny had a sore back, had it checked further, and there is a back injury. He is sitting out this weekend’s GP as a precautionary against further injury, but hopes to come back stronger than ever. Clement had successful shoulder surgery – but his return to racing action is still to be determined.

In what many consider quite a surprise, based on results to date in 2011, former MX2 World Motocross Champion, and two-time AMA East Regional Supercross Champion Christophe Pourcel, from France, riding a Kawasaki, won today’s MX1 Qualifying Race by just under two seconds from countryman Steven Frossard! World Champion Tony Cairoli finished third. (Full results below.)

In the MX2 class, it was Ken Roczen on top in today’s Qualifying Race. KTM Red Bull Teka teammate Jeffrey Herlings scored a 22nd in the 20 minute plus two lap qualifier, and did the same amount of laps (11) as the leaders. However, Jeffrey fell on the first lap, and re-started in last place. Roczen, by virtue of his win today, gets first choice on the starting gate for tomorrow’s MX GP.

Second today in MX2, Gautier Paulin, the stylish French rider on the Monster Yamaha. Third goes to Arnaud Tonus. (Full results below.)

“Home town” riders Tommy Searle finished fourth, and Max Anstie was officially scored as 35th, although two laps down.
