Saturday’s Qualifying Heats for the Italian Grand Prix … in MX2, in only his second GP, Dutch racer, and 15 year old Jeffrey Herlings was the winner. Second goes to World MX2 Motocross Champion Marvin Musquin from France, with third going to Ken Roczen of Germany. In the MX1 class, former World Motocross Champion, and ‘home town’ race David Philippaerts won in an exciting race over current World MX Champion Tony Cairoli. Third place was Max Nagl.
In the MX2 Grand Prix on Sunday, on a perfectly prepared race circuit, Marvin Musquin won both motos. But it was not without drama. In the second heat, leading all the race until the final lap was 15 year old sensation Jeffrey Herlings. Musquin made the pass for the lead over Herlings just a few hundred yards before the checkered flag! Suzuki’s 15 year old sensation, Ken Roczen finished second overall with motos of 2/3. And Herlings was third overall with finishes of 6/2, in only his second Grand Prix. American Zach Osborne finished fourth overall today, with rides of 5/5.
In the MX1 Grand Prix on Sunday, David Philippaerts was running strong in the first moto – until a fall. Clement Desalle would go on to win the heat, with World MX1 Champion second. But the day belonged to Mr. Cairoli. And in front of his home crowd, the World Champ did not disappoint. He won the second moto convincingly, and with it, the overall victory. He also takes over the points lead by one point over KTM team-mate Max Nagl. Second overall on the day belonged to Clement Desalle, and Nagl was third.
