In the sand of Holland KTM’s defending World MX2 Champion Marvin Musquin won his second consecutive title in the first moto, as second in points Ken Roczen had bike problems that literally left him in tears on the side of the track. Roczen came back to win the second moto, but Gautier Paulin won the MX2 overall. Tony Cairoli is the World Motocross Champion in MX1 for 2010, having clinched that title at the last event in Brazil, and he won today’s MX1 Grand Prix too!

If you could describe Lierop in a short simple statement – it would be sand. Deep, dark, moist, rough, sand. The roughest track we’ve probably ever seen. Motocross is a tough, tough sport. But this is a “man’s” track. It becomes so brutal after just a few laps. Photos don’t do it justice, video doesn’t do it justice – you have to see it to believe how rough and difficult this track becomes.
It’s old school MX, but with new school racers like Marvin Musquin (who clinched his second consecutive MX2 World Motocross title today in the first moto, as main competitor Ken Roczen had a bike problem while leading the first moto … he’s also coming to America to race for KTM next season), Ken Roczen – amazing guy to watch on a bike – right now maybe the favorite for the 250 title next year, Gautier Paulin – French factory Yamaha team rider who has ridden supercross in America earlier this year. Max Nagl – from Germany who is very aggressive on the 450 KTM, David Philippaerts and Rui Goncalves who charged hard their entire moto …. and World Motocross Champion Antonio Cairoli. This guy is riding on a different planet – he was involved in a crash right after the start of the heat, remounted in last, and came thru the pack like he was racing against amateurs – an amazing performance. Clement Desalle was also involved in that first lap pile up – and finished the MX1 Qualifying heat outside the top 15.
KTM made major news this morning at a press conference, with KTM CEO Mr. Pierer announcing that Roger De Coster has joined KTM to run their North American racing efforts in supercross and motocross, starting in October.
In the first MX 2 moto, Ken Roczen was trying to do what he needed to do – win. He was out front and leading … and then his bike came to a grinding halt. He had to leave it literally on the track and walk away – his championship hopes for 2010 over.
Gautier Paulin would go on to win the moto, but all eyes were focused on Marvin Musquin. With Roczen out of the race, Musquin has clinched the 2010 World Motocross Championship of MX2! The top three in moto 1 – Paulin first, Joel Roelants second, Marvin Musquin third.
In the second moto, Ken Roczen came out and smoked the field. Marvin was the early leader, but with the championship sewn up … possibly he rode a bit conservatively. Regardless, Roczen would win the moto, Musquin was second, Paulin finished third, and with that third Gautier Paulin wins the MX2 Grand Prix of Benelux today.
But congratulations to the 2010 World Motocross Champion of MX2 – Marvin Musquin from France, riding for KTM!
Here is what Marvin had to say right after the race: “Two World MX titles in two years, that’s really great for me, also for KTM and Red Bull. It was a great season and I rode well all year, although this wasn’t so easy in the last GPs. The bike has been fantastic and now I go to Italy for the final round and of course I also want to win there.”
The first MX1 moto saw Max Nagl with the early lead – and he held it until the end. Clement Desalle had a fall in the first corner, effectively ruining his day. World MX1 Champion Tony Cairoli had a terrible start … but nothing seems to deter Tony from being the best rider on the GP scene. Tony’s riding on another level compared to everyone else. Bad start? No big deal. Just pass everyone in your way – like it’s easy! : ) Tony passed everyone except team-mate Max Nagl to come all the way back to second place at the finish of the first moto. He is so fast, and takes racing lines on the track that are great to watch, and … he’s fast : )
The second MX1 moto – Tony Cairoli won. And won the overall Grand Prix too! Tony is so fast … and he can win on any surface, in any country. Hard pack tracks? No problem. Wins. Mud. No problem. Wins. Sand tracks (like the one today here in The Netherlands). Win. Come to USA and race. Win. Tony’s amazing.
