Tonight, the 2008 AMA/FIM Supercross Series was decided between Chad Reed & Kevin Windham, here in Las Vegas! It’s also the annual Dave Coombs Sr. 250 East/West Shootout, combining the best of the East and West Lites divisions.
Kevin Windham, Davi Millsaps and Andrew Short put on an impressive show holding an all-Honda lead for about 1/2 the race with Chad Reed in 4th place. Windham had as much as 4 seconds on Reed for several of the exciting main event laps. Each of the top 3 contenders for the podium made one or more mistakes allowing Chad Reed to pick them off one-by-one. Millsaps spun out first and fell several positions behind putting Reed in 3rd. Next Reed set his sights on Andrew Short and followed him uncomfortably close for a few laps before Short’s mistake cost him the 2nd place finish. As Reed closed in bit by bit, Windham’s hold on the Championship eventually was taken by Reed who earned every bit of the first place finish of the main event in Vegas.
In the Lites class Ryan Villopoto ran ahead of the pack nearly the entire race. Following just 3 seconds behind Villopoto, but equally as fast, Ryan Dungey rode smooth and confidently. A tiny wobble cost Villopoto one second of his lead, then another mistake cost another second and he became noticably rattled by Dungey so close and such high stakes on the line. This was one of the best races we have ever seen in an East/West shootout and every fan was standing in awe and screaming as Ryan Dungey finally passed Villopoto on the second to last lap.
