1 day moto + 1 day surf =
Published September 11th, 2006
The eighth annual Surfercross – moto on day 1 at Starwest MX Park, and surf on day 2 at San Onofre State Beach.
The Oakley Surfercross presented by Boost Mobile is sponsored by Fox Racing, Wahoo’s Fish Taco, Asterisk, Kawasaki, Yamaha, Starwest Cycle Park, CytoMax Sport Energy Drink, N-Style and Weekend Warrior. Created by Jeremy Albrecht and Mike Parsons, Surfercross has become an event that many pros look forward to each year – it’s a fun, no-pressure event that combines the overlapping interests of many surf and moto athletes.
The event is set up as a team competition, with each pro motocrosser and each pro surfer riding on day one and surfing on day two. Teams are decided based on the luck of the draw – a random drawing at the start of day one determines who will be teamed up with whom. After each day, the points are tallied and the team with the best combined score for both disciplines takes the overall win. Past winners include: David Pingree/Adam Wickwire, Josh Hansen/Scott Farnsworth, James Stewart/Mike Parsons, Rick Johnson/Sunny Garcia, Dave Castillo/CJ Hobgood and Nathan Ramsey/Bryan Hewitson.
Day 1: Despite 105-degree weather, Kai Patterson and Chris Barrett pulled off the overall moto win by going 1/1 at Starwest. Volcom’s Troy Powell and Rich Taylor came in second and Oakley’s Ronny Nelson and Cycle World magazine’s Ryan Dudek finished in third.
Day 2: The surf day was another story, as Mike Parsons and Joel Albrecht took top honors. Oakley-sponsored surfer Brandon Rambo and Boost Mobile-sponsored freestyle rider Jeff “Ox” Kargola came in second, with Volcom’s Troy Ekert and Asterisk’s Dave Castillo in third.
When is came time to hand out the trophies, Rambo and Ox emerged as the 2006 Surfercross overall champions with a 4 (moto) & 2 (surf) total score. Second overall went to the team of Ekert/Castillo with a 5 (moto) & 3(surf), and Parsons/Albrecht scored third with a 9 (moto) & 1(surf).
In the Industry class, Cycle News magazine’s Don Burke and FMF’s Donnie Emler, Jr., took the overall win with a 2/5 score. Second overall went to the team of Randy Lawrence and Derric Swinford with a 1/16, and Cycle World’s Mark Cernicky and AJ Sjostrom came in third overall with a 4/14.
Moto industry icons Jeff Emig and Brian Deegan came out. Surf icon Sunny Garcia was committed to the event as always. Even James Stewart came out to watch and see how it all went down.
